Chris Weidman reveals why he’s not fighting Anderson Silva on Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua card

Chris Weidman has officially withdrawn from his planned boxing match against Anderson Silva on the Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua card after suffering a brutal bicep tendon tear during training. The fight was set to be his professional boxing debut and a highly anticipated trilogy with Silva, following their two legendary UFC bouts.

Originally, Weidman was scheduled to face Silva on the November card headlined by Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis. When that event was canceled and replaced with Paul vs Anthony Joshua on December 19, Weidman still expected to compete. However, disaster struck during a routine sparring session.

“I didn’t think I could get hurt boxing. It’s so much easier on the body compared to MMA,” Weidman said on Instagram. “Tore my bicep tendon throwing a left hook. There goes that tendon.”

Weidman attempted to push through the injury, hoping to rest and recover. But with his tendon 95 percent torn, the pain was too severe, especially when he tried to throw punches with speed or hold his arm up for defense.

“It looked like nothing. I was sparring some professional boxer and in the first one-minute, I threw not even a hard left hook and my bicep just popped,” Weidman explained.

This boxing match was supposed to mark his return to combat sports after briefly stepping away from MMA and signing with the GFL, which later collapsed due to financial issues. He then saw the Silva matchup as a fresh opportunity to compete at a high level.

Now recovering from surgery, Weidman remains optimistic about revisiting the Silva fight in the future.

“I hope it happens in the future,” he said. “I really fell in love with boxing. I’m hoping to get this thing healed up fast and get back into training and see if I could get that fight back with Anderson.”

With Weidman out, Most Valuable Promotions has confirmed Anderson Silva will now face former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley on December 19 in Miami.
