🩼 “If He Kicks Again, I Lose the Fight”: Valter Walker Fought Through a Broken Leg to Win at UFC 321

Valter Walker continues to defy the odds — and physics. The Brazilian heavyweight extended his win streak to four with yet another heel hook finish at UFC 321, but few realized just how close he came to disaster inside the Octagon.

Walker revealed after the fight that he actually broke his leg just seconds into the bout against Louie Sutherland. The injury happened after a heavy kick early in the round, forcing him to make a split-second decision: either finish the fight quickly or risk losing the ability to stand.

“When he kicked me, I feel my leg broke,” Walker told MMA Fighting. “When I put it back on the ground, my foot wasn’t listening to me. I understood something was going wrong. I said, ‘I need to go for takedown and finish the fight fast, because if he kicks again, I lose the fight.’”

Despite the intense pain, Walker kept his composure and hid his injury perfectly, refusing to show weakness to his opponent. Seconds later, he took Sutherland down and locked in his signature heel hook for a first-round submission victory — his fourth straight by that exact method.

“If you show pain, the other guy’s going to kick again,” he explained. “I felt the pain, my leg stopped listening to me, but I couldn’t show it. If I show him that, he’ll believe even more in his power.”

Even his closest circle didn’t believe the extent of his injury. Walker said his wife and coaches were shocked when he revealed the break, especially since he was still walking — albeit with a limp — after the fight.

A trip to the doctor confirmed the damage: a cracked fibula. Fortunately, no surgery will be needed, and Walker expects to return to action by February or March 2026.

“The doctor said it’s like five or six weeks for recovery,” Walker said. “I just need to use the cast and not put weight on it. If I do, maybe the bone moves and I’ll need surgery.”

While he won’t be able to fight on the UFC Qatar card in November as he’d hoped, Walker’s toughness has impressed fans and fighters alike. For now, he’s focusing on healing properly — even if his competitive spirit is itching to return to the gym.

“Maybe it gives me time to relax,” he admitted. “In six years, I never take a break. My doctor, my coach, and my wife said, ‘please, one week don’t do nothing.’ But next week, I’ll be back doing upper body workouts.”

Even with a broken leg, Valter Walker’s fighting spirit remains unbreakable.
