UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is still facing serious vision issues following the brutal eye poke that ended his title defense against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi.
Aspinall’s father and head coach, Andy Aspinall, gave a worrying update on Tom’s YouTube channel — revealing that his son still can’t see out of one eye and has only partial vision in the other. 😞
“[Eye specialist] said it’s bad,” Andy said. “His right eye he still can’t see anything. It’s just gray. They’ve tested him on words and he just couldn’t see anything. His left eye, 50 percent, he went down about four letters and then just couldn’t see the letters.”
Andy added that Tom has been struggling mentally after the incident. “For me, everything’s about his health,” he said. “It’s not about fighting. Losing your sight — especially from a foul — is devastating.” 🥺
He also took aim at how MMA handles eye poke fouls, criticizing the lack of serious penalties:
“Nobody’s ever lost a fight because of an eye poke … but the safety of the thing is paramount. If it was somebody else’s son, they’d say what I say.”
While Andy holds no personal grudge against Gane, he believes changes must be made to protect fighters in the future. “Something needs to be done to stop what happened in Tom’s fight,” he concluded. ⚠️
