Umar Nurmagomedov left UFC 321 with a win, but not without a valuable lesson from his legendary cousin and coach, Khabib Nurmagomedov. After defeating Mario Bautista via unanimous decision (30-27 x3), Umar admitted that one mistake nearly cost him the fight — ducking into a knee that sent him to the canvas early in Round 2.
“Khabib always told me, ‘Don’t do this,’” Umar said at the post-fight presser. “He warned me many times in training. Today, I paid for that mistake.”
Despite the scare, Umar recovered and dominated with his signature wrestling. Khabib, known for his perfectionist standards, praised Umar’s performance but reminded him there’s more work to do: “He said, ‘We win, but we’re not finished.’”
Umar, now 17-1, is back in the title mix and hopes to face champion Merab Dvalishvili again or top contenders like Deiveson Figueiredo or Aiemann Zahabi. “I just want to fight,” Umar said. “Eat, sleep, train, repeat.”
At 29, he believes his best years are just beginning — and under Khabib’s guidance, he’s determined to eliminate every mistake on the path to gold.
