Tom Aspinall Furious After Eye Poke Ends UFC 321 Main Event vs Ciryl Gane

The UFC 321 main event between Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane ended in shocking fashion after an accidental eye poke forced a no-contest result.

Aspinall, defending his interim heavyweight title for the first time, was unable to continue after Gane’s fingers went directly into his eye midway through the opening round. Referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight at 4:35 of Round 1, ruling the poke accidental.

Visibly furious and in pain, Aspinall shouted to the crowd:

“Guys, I just got f*cking poked knuckle deep in the eyeball. Why are you booing? I can’t see!”

The British heavyweight later added:

“This is bullshit. The fight was just getting going. I’m pissed off. I can hardly open my eye.”

Gane, clearly disappointed, apologized after the anticlimactic finish:

“I feel sorry for Tom, for the crowd, for the fans. I’m really disappointed, but this is the sport.”

It’s a frustrating night for both fighters — and a major question mark for what comes next in the heavyweight division.
